AEW Dark 10-15-19 - Kenny Omega vs. Joey Janela

I didn't cover last week's show because there wasn't much worth covering - although I did get a thrill out of seeing the Lucha Bros. live. This week's got a highly-regarded Omega vs. Janela match that definitely seems worth a recap. Tony meets with the Bucks backstage before the show last week and Kenny tells them he wants a match this week. They say that since he went through a glass table, they're giving him a day off. Kenny says he made an AEW Dark match and he wants a lights out match with Janela. Kenny says he has to do it for himself and they "wish him well" tonight.

"The Librarian" Peter Avalon is out with his Highspots robe cutting a local sports team promo. Kip Sabian's out to face both him and Sonny Kiss. Kip is impressed by Sonny's split in the ropes. Sabian dislocates his finger on a somersault senton off the second rope to the floor. Doc Sampson fixes him up while Leva slyly moves the books around to help them. Leva hits Sonny with a book and Avalon gets 2 off an O'Connor roll. Deathly Hollows hits for Sabian and Avalon takes the fall. Dark Order and the Hybrid 2 face off against CIMA and SCU!
Nice back handspring into an eye rake by Evans, who takes the fall over Sky with a jackknife cradle with a prawn hold. Cody sets up the Undesirable to Undeniable segment with Aubrey Edwards. She was brought into the MYC and she worked 4 times and she thought something was missing and Cody felt that WWE didn't help him with that either. She said that she had to find what needs to be different and at All Out when she held the belt up, she reached a new height. She's paying her bills and having a friggin' blast.

Tony talks about Private Party beating the Bucks, leading to highlights. Cody's save of Dustin is showcased with MJF's save allowing his character to grow a bit. JR talks about having lunch with Joey Janela and learning that he's a unique cat. Exalibur calls him one of the weirdest guys ever in a very weird business. Ross talks about Janela's win/loss record being iffy in AEW - but the same is true for Omega. Excalibur talks about how in real-time, Omega's brains were scrambled on Dynamite. Ross says that these lights out matches have no effect on win/loss records - but do play an overall part in their careers.

Joey lands a nice rana to the floor and gets a tope into the barricade. Janela stacks chairs up mid-ring while JR gets the international object reference. Big chair to the face of Kenny as they cut a concerned woman and a guy next to her with the yellowest teeth on Earth. Omega hits the Terminator flip dive to the floor and smashes his legs on the rail. Omega puts him up on his shoulders and Joey elbows free. Finlay roll into a moonsault gets 2.

Snapdraon hits! SNAPDRAGON ON THE APRON! OWA is teased on the steps is met with a German! Omega hits a corner ladder SNAPGERMAN by Joey into the ladder gets 2.9! VTrigger is met with a big lariat and then a fisherman buster for 2.5 for Joey! Joey lands a big superplex to get an edge and send Kenny to the apron. Joey goes for a legsweep, but Omega hangs on. Kenny goes for a powerbomb on a metal-up table mid-ring, but Joey backdrops him onto it. CORNER DVD BY JOEY!

Joey goes for a frog splash off the ladder, but Omega moves and he just splats. V TRIGGER leads to a Moxley wacky line in a somewhat subtle bit. Paradigm Shift sends another message, but only gets 2. Joey hiptosses him over the top through a table and a double foot stomp on a chair gets 2.5. Teep kick sends Kenny off the chair and into the buckle. Joey sets up a double chairs-up bridge and JOEY EATS A SLAM ONTO IT!

V TRIGGER INTO THE CHAIR FACE-FIRST! RUNNING OWA ON THE CHAIR HITS AND ENDS IT! This was easily Omega's best match since his New Japan run. There still feels like there's something missing with Kenny and it's hard to pin-point. The quality of his opposition has gone down a shade and maybe it's a matter of him working to the level of his opponent at this stage in his career or he's just trying to find his footing again. Either way, this was a fantastic match and a must-watch.
